Scientists Discover Adorable New Deep-Sea Snailfish!

Scientists have made an exciting discovery deep in the Pacific Ocean—a brand new species of snailfish! This tiny fish was found more than 2,600 meters (about 8,500 feet) below the surface, in a dark and chilly part of the ocean where sunlight can’t reach.

The new snailfish is small, pink, and has a see-through body, making it look super cute and a little bit like a cartoon character! Scientists say it’s different from any other snailfish they’ve seen before. It was discovered during a special research trip near the Atacama Trench, off the coast of South America.

Snailfish are amazing because they can survive in places with high pressure and freezing temperatures—places where most other animals can’t live. This discovery helps scientists learn more about the mysterious creatures that live in the deepest parts of our oceans.

Who knows what other cool animals are waiting to be found in the deep sea?
